Water Retention

I’ve been reading about water retention and here’s a few of my findings.  Hope you find it as interesting as I did.

Drink Water

When you feel waterlogged, guzzling a glass of H2O might be the last thing on your mind. But it may be the best thing for you. Water flushes out the system better than anything else and can reduce premenstrual bloating. Drink 8 to 10 glasses a day; more when you exercise.

(NOTE: This advice is only for PMS bloating. If your water retention is caused by any other medical condition, be sure to ask your doctor before drinking extra water — it may not be good for you.)

Help for Premenstrual Swelling

If water retention plagues you on a monthly basis, here are several things that might prove helpful.

Pass up drugstore diuretics. Some over-the counter medications intended to relieve menstrual cramp pain also claim to help eliminate premenstrual water weight. Some of these products contain caffeine, which may work as a diuretic, according to Candace Brown, Pharm.D., associate professor of pharmacy and psychiatry at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. “The down side to caffeine, however, is that it also promotes breast pain and tenderness as well as irritability,” says Dr. Brown.

Have some herbal tea. Parsley or uva-ursi tea can help flush out excess water without any harmful side effects, according to Dr. Lark. You can find these teas in most health foods stores, she adds.

Check out vitamin B6. Taking up to 250 milligrams of vitamin B6 daily helps reduce premenstrual water retention, says Dr. Lark. This nutrient also reduces fluid buildup caused by hormone replacement therapy during menopause. Vitamin B6, however, can be toxic in higher doses and should only be taken under the supervision of a doctor. Ask your doctor whether a vitamin B6 supplement is appropriate for you.

Try calcium. Researchers at the New York Metropolitan Hospital found that a daily calcium supplement provided relief from premenstrual water retention in three-fourths of the women who took it. “Your best bet is to take a 500-milligram chewable tablet twice daily at breakfast and dinner,”‘ says Susan Thys-Jacobs, M.D., assistant professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Ask your doctor whether these supplements might prove helpful in your case

Natural diuretics are natural foods or herbs that allow increased flow of urine and thereby aid removal of fluids from the body. While natural diuretics aid removal of excess fluids from the body, it may also mean loss of important vitamins and minerals too. It is essential that they are supplemented to prevent loss of vital electrolytes. Look up some natural diuretic food that you can incorporate into your diet.

Foods like salt and sugar cause the body to retain considerable fluids. They may lead to bloating and water retention. Often inadequate protein in the diet can lead to fluid retention. When the body does not get enough amino acids or B-vitamins, it may accumulate excess fluids.

Diuretics are prescribed for people suffering from edema – accumulation of fluids in the body tissues. People suffering from high blood pressure or heart diseases may be prescribed diuretics. Women suffering from PMS symptoms such as bloating are often advised to take diuretics to rid the body of excess fluid retention. Often diuretics are taken in a bid to lose weight. If taken indiscriminately, diuretics can lead to serious consequences such as dehydration and potassium deficiency.

More and more people are resorting to natural foods and herbs that exhibit diuretic properties instead of diuretic pills. Moderation is the watchword even in the case of natural diuretics.   • Green tea is a natural diuretic food that has been in use for centuries in China.
  • Consumption of cranberry juice can aid in removal of excess fluid retention.
  • Apple cider vinegar exhibits natural diuretic properties and in addition maintains the potassium levels. It can be added to the salad dressing.
  • Dandelion is often used as a natural diuretic.

Beets are natural diuretic foods that attack floating body fats and fatty deposits.

Oats contain silica – a natural diuretic.

Cabbage is known to aid breakage of fatty deposits, especially around the abdominal region.

Carrots are a rich source of carotene that speeds the metabolic rate of the body and hastens removal of fat deposits and waste.

Lettuce aids better metabolism and flushing of toxins.

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin C that aid the metabolism and release of water from the kidney to flush out waste.

Other than the other excellent properties that Garlic possesses, it is a natural diuretic food that aids breakage of fat. Horseradish, raw onions and radish speed up your metabolism.
